First Annual Young Women's Empowerment Conference: Hosted by the Nia Girls of the Carver Center

Nia is a leadership group for young women at the Carver Teen Center, in Port Chester, NY. In Swahili, the word Nia means PURPOSE, and their goal is for their members to explore and discover their purpose in all the realms of their lives. The group is compromised of young women from Port Chester High School, ages 13-18, who meet regularly to develop skills, attitudes, and a sisterhood that will help empower, educate, and guide these young women towards success! On Saturday May 4th, 2019 the Nia Girls hosted their first Young Women's Empowerment Conference. This was a day to inspire and motivate these young women to Dream Big and Find Their Voice!

The event was opened up by the beautiful Musician, songwriter and poet Sharisse (She-Salt) Stancil-Ashford. She-Salt's energy and meaningful pieces was an absolute great start to what would be a memorable Empowerment Conference for these young women. The Young Women's Youth Empowerment Conference had the pleasure to have Shanae V. Williams, Councilwoman of Yonkers as the Keynote speaker for this event. Ms. Shanae Williams spoke on the importance of life lessons and how these powerful lessons will lead you to a successful future as it did for her with some bumps and bruises along the way. There were 6 inspirational and motivational panelists: Hayley (Signed by Us) a Non-profit organization created to improve the mental and emotional well-being of young girls and women of color through empowerment, support and advocacy. Sharena Taylor, a Georgia tech Alumna, Coach and Educator in the Yonkers School District focusing on college readiness, access and success! Deanna Harris, A Multimedia Journalist and Entrepreneur who has a Youtube channel: Chattin w| d! which is all about uplifting the youth and guiding them in the right direction because they are our future! Michelle McCrae, business owner of Form Fiit which focuses on the mind and body, personal training, group fitness and Youth Programs. Amanda Vacca a Mental Health Counselor who works full time with teens and adults at St. Vincents Port Chester Recovery Center and last but not least Ziyah House a former Nia Girl and a 20 year-old college student who currently holds a 4.0 GPA and is majoring in Radiology and specializing in Sonography.

This was the beginning of what would now be an annual event for the Nia Girls! Every year these young women will get older and wiser and with the help of continued inspiration, motivation and empowerment from the women mentioned above by their side, we are sure they will go FAR!
